Golf in RomaniaBefore the Second World War, there were 6 golf courses in Romania: one in Bucharest [Bucharest Country Club - the original name of Diplomatic Club], two golf courses at the seaside [one at Mamaia and one at Eforie Nord], one at Teleajen and one near Bucharest, at Buftea [that belonged to Prince Stirbei. Two of them were destroyed during the war; the other 4 had been in use until 1948 when the communist regime decided to close them.
The only 18-hole golf course that existed in Romania during the communist period was the Diplomatic Club. As result of the communist period this Club has only 6 holes remaining but has plans to extend in the future.
Nowadays, the Diplomatic Club occupies a beautiful location in Bucharest, Herastrau Park, and as well as the golf course offers conference meeting rooms, reception salons, tennis courts, a swimming pool, a mini-football field, and a bar-restaurant-terrace.
Since the end of the communist era, golf in Romania is therefore in a new period of relative infancy.
At the start of 2012 there were just 4 golf courses, and 551 golfers registered with the European Golf Association [EGA]. It is believed that there is currently one new golf facility in construction, and approximately 9 in various stages of planning and pre-construction. In addition, there are media reports of another 10 plus golf facilities that are planned in various locations around the country.
The number of new golf facilities will undoubtedly change in the future because Romania has great potential as a golf country - for the Romanian people, and as an international golf tourism destination.
